UNIVERSITY OF GHANA SET TO LAUNCH SPORT FUND ON JUNE 1
The University of Ghana Sports Directorate will launch the much awaited UG Sport Fund on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Great Hall at 5:00 pm.
What is University of Ghana Sport Fund (UG-SF)
The UG-SF is an initiative to motivate and support talented and needy student athletes of the University of Ghana, and to attract potential talents for admission into the University
UG-SF is a form of support scheme that the University of Ghana Sports Directorate shall make available to exceptional but less privileged student athletes as and when required and resources are available. The support shall take the form of book bursary, academic user fee, residential facility user fees, national and international sports training, sportswear (kits), participation in tournaments and insurance. In the long term and when resources become available, the Fund shall also be used to develop sports infrastructure on the campuses of the University of Ghana.
Dignitaries to be Present
Dignitaries to grace the occasion include the Vice-Chancellor and other Senior Management of the University, Members of Sports Advisory Board, Members of Sports Management Committee, Ghana Association of University Administrators, UG Community, the Minister of Youth and Sports, some Heads of Corporate Ghana as well as some affluent individuals in the society. Also in attendance will be representatives from the National Sports Authority, Ghana Football Association, Staff of UG, some UG athletes and media houses.
The Special Guests of Honour for the launch are the 1st Vice President of the Confederation of African Football and President of the Ghana Football Association Mr. Kwesi Nyantakyi and Chief Executive Officer of McDan Shipping and Logistics Dr. Daniel McKorley.
UG Sports Ambassadors, UG honourary Sports Patrons and other Sports Patrons will be unveiled at the launch.
The Director of Sports Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu shared his thoughts on this remarkable milestone in the annals of sports in Ghana and for that matter sphere of educational institutions.
“This is a feat in the sports story and history of the university and the manifestation of how serious the university is integrating sports into its academic curriculum. I look forward to the success of this programme in pushing and promoting sports to a higher level.”
He added that this will catapult UG in an insurmountable lead in such initiatives and support to its internal and external stakeholders.
UG Cross Country prodigy and 5000 meters champion, Miss Misiso Yayra Manah a level 300 Political Science student athlete and a beneficiary of the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students was impressed with this new initiative and was grateful to the Sports Directorate for such a policy;
“I am very much pleased with the steps the University is taking through the Sports Directorate to improve the standards of sports on campus as well as make athletes on campus have a comfortable environment to develop their talents. This fund is timely and will help address some of the challenges we face as athletes.”
