Tertiary Football League


The University of Ghana male football team will participate in the maiden Tertiary Football League which begins on Saturday, 30th September, 2017 at the University of Ghana Stadium. This league is being organised by Rite Sports the originators of the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Basketball Championship.

Participating Teams

The 2017 Tertiary Football League is made up of twelve teams divided into two Zones, six for the Southern Zone (Group A) and another six for the Northern Zone (Group B). Participating institutions in Group A are University of Ghana, Accra Technical University, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Ghana Technical University, All Nations University College and Marshalls University College. Group B is made up Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Garden City University College, Christian Service University, University of Education Winneba (Kumasi Campus), Baptist University College and Kumasi Technical University.


The format for the league will be an ‘All Play All’ with the best two teams in each zone qualifying for the Top Four. The league which commences on Saturday, 30th September, 2017 will end on Saturday, 18th November, 2017.

Support from Stakeholders

The launch of the League which was broadcast live on Kwese Free Sports in Accra on Saturday (23rd September 2017) saw a large number of prominent stakeholders. The league has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Football Association. Both are relishing that talents will be unearthed to feed our various national teams across all levels while they still pursue their academic work.

Team UG Preparation

Team UG started training about a month ago at the stadium with two sessions a day. The twenty- three players selected to represent the University in the league were all selected from the various Halls of residence participating in the 2017/2018 UG Football League. The Coach of the team Mr. Tahiru Yusif Amuda was impressed with his players

 “I must say I am really impressed with the performance of the team so far. The zeal and commitment they have shown on the training grounds is a positive signal every Coach wants to see in his team. The new players who have joined the team are the right caliber of players who fit the kind of profile we want for the team. Hopefully, we can make a mark in the league.”

University of Ghana will be the host in the Southern Zone playing their opening match against their rivals, Accra Technical University on 30th September. 2017 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium at 3:00 pm.

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology will host the Northern Zone, playing their first league match against Garden City University College.
