THE SEARCH FOR GHANA’S FASTEST HUMAN CONTINUES
UG Community Invited to Cheer on Students
The Ghana’s Fastest Human (GFH) Athletics Programme sponsored by Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) continues its search for the fastest Ghanaian. This time at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday, July 22, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. The event is for athletes from the Eastern, Greater Accra and Volta Regions.
Final Open Competition
This is the last Open Competition for the GNPC Ghana’s Fastest Human 2017 campaign to find the fastest in the Under 10, Under 15, Under 18 and seniors categories for both male and female. The campaign has been to all the other seven regions in Ghana and it’s now the turn of these three regions mentioned above. The winners from each region will meet in Kumasi on Saturday, September 16, 2017 for the Final of Finals.
Modus Operandi of GFH Athletics Program
The Program, which is in its 5th year in operation, works with Corporate Ghana and Government and organizes 100-meter competitions across Ghana for males and females in Under 10, Under 15, Under 18 and Seniors categories.
Competition Runs from March to September
The event is from March to August every year with the ‘Final of Finals’ in September. Once everyone has had a chance to try out, the Program selects 250 of the fastest sprinters in Ghana, 125 male and 125 female and proceed to the Final of Finals, until we have the Fastest in Ghana for that particular category and year.
They are rewarded with the Ultimate Prize of being selected into a Speedsters Club where Corporate Ghana pays for their training, nutrition and everything else for a whole year. The athletes are Sponsored by GNPC and Adidas Ghana, and supported by Red Sea Maritime, Pippas Gym and Moringa KING!
Ida and Desmond Making UG Proud
To date, there are 3 Sprinters in the Speedsters Club with two University of Ghana. Ida Mensah a University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) beneficiary and a level 200 student reading Business Administration ran her personal best of 11.66 seconds during the Ghana Circuit Games in Kumasi in April 2017 and also made the 2nd Best 100 meters women’s time in Ghana.
Desmond Aryee in his third year reading Computer Science is the reigning Champion in 100m in Africa (fastest University student in Africa in 2016), ranked the 4th best performer in athletics by the competition organizers in the 8th All Africa University Games at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) under the auspices of The Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) in 2016, using the IAAF’s Scoring Tables, after running an impressive personal best 10.40s to take the men’s 100m final.
Apart from the above UG student athletes, 15 year old Gifty Oku, the fastest in all of Ghana in her age category is also part of the programme.
There will be Corporate and Celebrity 4x100 meters. The programme entry and registration is free for anyone interested and wants to participate.
