The University of Ghana Football League (UGFL) for the 2017/2018 academic year will kick off on Wednesday, 13th September, 2017. This will be the seventh season since its inception in the 2010/2011 academic year.
Who won the 2016/2017 edition?
Akuafo Hall won the 2016/2017 edition with two sublime goals from Joshua Abayeteye against rivals Legon Hall to defend the title they won in 2015/2016 to equal Mensah Sarbah Halls record in 2013/2014 and 2014/2015. In all Akuafo Hall nicknamed “The farmers” has won the league on three different occasions and it seems like they may monopolize the league for years to come. Other winners of the league include Legon Hall (2011/2012).
How many Halls are participating?
The 2017/2018 UGFL will have a total of fifteen (15) teams (made up Halls of Residence, Distance Education and City Campus) put in four groups with the winner of each group progressing to play in the Top Four of the competition. A. A. Kwapong will not partake in the 2017/2018 league for fielding an unqualified student in the semi-final match against Legon Hall in the 2016/2017 league. They are serving one academic year ban.
Commonwealth Hall in difficult Group
Commonwealth Hall (Vandals) will face familiar faces Hilla Limann and James Topp Nelson Yankah Halls in Group B. These two halls have given the Vandals stern competition in the past two academic years with Limann qualifying ahead of them in the 2015/2016 academic year to make the Top Four. Defending Champions Akuafo Hall are in a relatively easy Group A. Other Halls in Group A are African Union, City Campus and Valco.
