GAUA Donates To Sport Fund

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) – Legon Branch, has presented a cheque for Twenty Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢20,000.00) to the University of Ghana Sport Fund during its end of year reception for its members at the ISSER Conference Facility grounds. The promulgation of the University of Ghana Sport Fund (UG-SF) has excited and moved individuals, groups and organisations to support the Fund. GAUA – Legon Branch, during its Annual General Meeting in March 2017 pledged to support this policy. Each member of GAUA paid One Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢100.00) in two instalments of Fifty Ghana Cedis (GH¢50.00) each.

A lot more individuals and organisations have so far contributed to the Fund since its inception.

The General Secretary for GAUA and Assistant Registrar at the Registrar’s Office Mrs. Barbara Blankson emphasized that the donation to the Fund was borne out of the desire to support talented student athletes of the University to ensure optimum development for the benefit of the University.

“GAUA’s exemplary gesture of donating to the UG Sport Fund is commendable. It is the Association’s expectation that the money will be used in providing the critical support needed by UG athletes to enable them focus on developing their sports talents for the benefit of UG.”

The Senior Assistant Registrar at the Pro Vice Chancellor’s (Academic and Student Affairs) Office, Mr. Benedict Fosu Adjei was delighted the Fund is now a reality and its timely intervention to help alleviate the woes student athletes go through in the University of Ghana.

I am very happy that The UG Sport Fund will address the unmet financial needs that can develop in a student-athlete’s life. I support the initiative and encourage my colleagues to support the Fund because it will assure student athletes that UG cares, and supports optimal combination of sports and academics. I hope the Fund will be expanded to attract more student athletes who can develop their potential like Anum, Gyan, Bisiu, Dodoo and many others.

The UG-SF is an initiative to motivate and support talented and needy student athletes of the University of Ghana, and to attract potential talents for admission into the University. So far eighteen (18) students have received full scholarship under the Fund in the 2017/2018 academic year. Among these student athletes admitted, six (6) are pursuing various degree programmes and twelve (12) reading Diploma courses.

Some beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the Sports Directorate and how important the UG-SF   is to their academic work and developing their talents on UG campus

“It is a privilege to be one of the beneficiaries of the UG-SF. This programme has given me an opportunity to further my education for free and to represent UG at competitions to show my talent. I am grateful to the Sports Directorate for the implementation of this policy. It has encouraged me to train the more to make UG proud.” – Naa Shika Adu, Tennis Athlete (BA Political Science and Sociology, Level 200)

“The UG-SF has enabled me to focus much better on my academics and training. I do not think about how my school fees will be paid any longer. I appreciate this support and in my opinion this will help attract more talented athletes to UG.” – Selasi Tamakloe, Basketball Athlete (Diploma in Public Administration, Final Year Student)
